Salting and Gritting of Roads

Nottinghamshire County Council has issued the following announcement re: the Salting and Gritting of Roads.

'Due to control being imposed nationally on the redistribution of salt, Nottinghamshire County Council will only be gritting A and B roads until further notice.

Nationally, demand for salt is far exceeding supply.

Nottinghamshire County Councillor Richard Jackson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: “Earlier this week we had secured a delivery of an extra 5,000 tonnes of salt for Nottinghamshire’s roads.

“Since then, the coordination of salt deliveries has been centralised by the government, effectively taking control of salt deliveries out of our hands.

“We are lobbying regionally and nationally to try and get more salt for Nottinghamshire. We will continue to push for a salt delivery during the weekend.

“But, unfortunately, the salt situation is now desperate in Nottinghamshire and without further deliveries, we will run out by Sunday.

“We need to make the stocks we have last, so we will now only treat A and B roads, not bus routes, until we have further deliveries.

“I would urge local people to take extra care on the roads during this time. This is a difficult situation, but we are doing all we can to keep the county moving.

“The situation is changing all the time and we will keep pressing for Nottinghamshire to be prioritised.  We promise to keep the public informed.”

All salt stocks are currently being coordinated by the national salt cell, which is a government advisory body which assesses where salt is needed most.

Nottinghamshire is one of many councils across England and Wales whose salt supplies are likely to run out by the end of the weekend if our suppliers cannot deliver to us.

The Council has contacted the national salt cell and made them aware of the situation and is awaiting a response.'

Currently the only roads in our area that fall into the 'A' and 'B' category are the A46 and the A52.

It is probable that local roads will NOT be treated.

PLEASE DRIVE  (AND WALK) CAREFULLY.
